Your file moves to USCIS. These are possible steps, not a timetable: each case is different and not every case includes them all. Always check your notices and the official sources.
We put the forms and the copies together with you, and you, or your attorney, send the package to USCIS with the government fee. From that moment the file is in the government's hands and the waiting starts. Anyone who promises you a date at this point is guessing.

USCIS mails Form I-797C, Notice of Action. It confirms that your case exists and it carries your receipt number. Write that number down, photograph it, keep it where you will find it again. It is the key that opens your case on the USCIS site, and the first thing we ask you for when you call.

For many kinds of cases USCIS calls you to an Application Support Center to take your fingerprints, your photograph and your signature. A separate notice tells you where to go, and USCIS lists on its own page what you have to bring.

A Request for Evidence is not a refusal. It is a letter that names exactly what is missing and prints the date by which your answer has to arrive. That date is on the letter, and it is the one part of this whole wait you can still control. Bring it to us the day it lands in your mailbox.

Not all of them do. Whether there is one, and what is asked in it, depends on the kind of case. USCIS publishes what to expect for each procedure. Two of them, because they are the ones we see most:
The decision arrives by mail, in a notice that says what was decided and on what grounds. Approved, denied, or a step in between. The wait ends there and, for most people, what comes next is written in that same notice.
Your receipt number opens your case on the USCIS site. USCIS also publishes its own processing times there. We do not publish times on this site, because they move and because they are not ours to publish.
You can submit an AR-11 address change directly online with USCIS at no cost. If you want clerical assistance completing it, CPV charges a fee we tell you beforehand; it is not a government fee.

The office is on Dairy Ashford, in west Houston. Most people who come in live close by, around Gulfton, Sharpstown and Alief. Houston being what it is, plenty of others are an hour of driving away, so when coming in is not practical we work by phone, email and video call.
